Berbera, Somaliland

Currently I’m working on two reportage stories from Somaliland. Here is a preview from coast town Berbera.

Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa is awesome! Construction sites everywhere. They really build a light rail system through town. Many houses were removed to create space for the fly-overs and new buildings. Here some impressions from the capital of Ethiopia.

Second hand market in Kampala

I’m on assignment for a German newspaper on one of Africa’s largest markets. Shakira Nalumansi, 22 years, sells bedsheets here. Formerly called Owino Market, St. Balikuddembe Market is one of the largest markets in Eastern Africa. More than 7,000 booths that line the chaotic alleys of Owino offer everything what people need for life. The largest section is the second hand fashion trade. With 15 percent most of them come from the USA, around 8,500 tons every year.

Slum

On assignment for the Bloomberg magazine in Kasanvu – Kanyogoga slum in Kampala.

Clean room

I’m on assignment for SPIEGEL magazine in the clean rooms and laboratories of a Pharmaceutical firm in Kampala. QCI produces anti malarials and anti retrovirals.

Uganda’s forces hunt Kony

I’m embedded with the Ugandan forces in Central African Republic hunting the LRA rebels. Leaded by Joseph Kony the Lord’s Resistance Army abducted 66,000 children and is responsible for the internal displacements of more than two million people. The photo shows one of the soldiers protecting his face from annoying flies in the bush.

Bujagali Hydropower Plant

William Groth, the construction manager of the new Bujagali Hydropower Plant stands on the dam a few days before the first turbine is switched on.

Nodding Syndrome Uganda

I’m on assignment for the Süddeutsche Zeitung far in the North of Uganda. Here a new form of epilepsy is spreading. Children start nodding, have hallucinations and are apathic. The new sickness is currently completely unknown for doctors.

Elections in DRC

There are national elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Therefore I am in Kinshasa checking the polling stations.

Preparing ballot material

Electoral officials of the Democratic Republic of Congo prepare ballot material for the presidential election at a MOUSCO warehouse at Goma airport.

Cutting wood in a forest reserve

Woodcutter cutting unnatural eucalyptus trees in Gishwati Forest. The forest is a protected reserve in the north-western part of Rwanda. During the Rwandan Genocide, refugees arrived in Gishwati Forest and began clearing it, often for subsistence farming. Reforestation efforts in the past few years have increased the remnant native forest to about 2,500 acres (10 km²).
