Addis Ababa is awesome! Construction sites everywhere. They really build a light rail system through town. Many houses were removed to create space for the fly-overs and new buildings. Here some impressions from the capital of Ethiopia.
I’m on assignment for a German newspaper on one of Africa’s largest markets. Shakira Nalumansi, 22 years, sells bedsheets here. Formerly called Owino Market, St. Balikuddembe Market is one of the largest markets in Eastern Africa. More than 7,000 booths that line the chaotic alleys of Owino offer everything what people need for life. The largest section is the second hand fashion trade. With 15 percent most of them come from the USA, around 8,500 tons every year.

I’m on assignment for SPIEGEL magazine in the clean rooms and laboratories of a Pharmaceutical firm in Kampala. QCI produces anti malarials and anti retrovirals.
I’m embedded with the Ugandan forces in Central African Republic hunting the LRA rebels. Leaded by Joseph Kony the Lord’s Resistance Army abducted 66,000 children and is responsible for the internal displacements of more than two million people. The photo shows one of the soldiers protecting his face from annoying flies in the bush.

I’m on assignment for the Süddeutsche Zeitung far in the North of Uganda. Here a new form of epilepsy is spreading. Children start nodding, have hallucinations and are apathic. The new sickness is currently completely unknown for doctors.

Woodcutter cutting unnatural eucalyptus trees in Gishwati Forest. The forest is a protected reserve in the north-western part of Rwanda. During the Rwandan Genocide, refugees arrived in Gishwati Forest and began clearing it, often for subsistence farming. Reforestation efforts in the past few years have increased the remnant native forest to about 2,500 acres (10 km²).
